“Can I use a Docomo iPhone overseas?” “Will a budget smartphone bought outside a carrier work abroad?”

These are common questions for anyone planning long-term travel overseas, whether it’s for studying abroad in places like the Philippines, working overseas, or relocating internationally.

To summarize first: smartphones purchased through major carriers such as Docomo require a SIM unlock procedure, while budget smartphones bought independently usually do not require any complicated steps.

In this article, I’ll explain the details clearly.

Why travelers benefit from SIM-free iPhones and Android phones

Less luggage

Using the same smartphone overseas means you don’t need to carry an extra device. That also means one less charger, which makes a noticeable difference when packing.

Keep the same contacts

Since you continue using the same phone, your contacts remain unchanged. There’s no need to re-enter phone numbers or re-register contacts on apps like LINE.

No hassle with LINE migration

LINE generally allows one account per device. If you buy a separate phone just for overseas use, transferring LINE can become a frustrating process.

Using budget smartphones purchased outside Docomo overseas

Budget smartphones purchased directly from online retailers or electronics stores—rather than through carriers like Docomo—are usually SIM unlocked.

If the local carrier’s frequency bands are compatible with your phone, you can simply insert a local SIM card and use the device overseas.

To be safe, it’s still recommended to confirm that your phone supports the frequency bands used by the local carrier before purchasing a SIM.

Using Docomo-purchased iPhones and Android phones overseas

Phones purchased through Docomo are generally SIM locked. This means inserting a different domestic or overseas SIM will not allow data communication by default.

However, the SIM lock can be removed through a simple procedure. After unlocking, the phone will still work normally with a Docomo SIM, so it’s best to complete the process as early as possible once overseas travel is planned.

How to unlock a Docomo device

The SIM unlock process differs depending on when the device was released.

  • Devices released between April 2011 and April 2015
  • Devices released from May 2015 onward

Bring your device to a Docomo Shop along with valid identification and the 3,000 yen unlock fee. You can check supported devices and other details at the links below.

Devices released from May 2015 onward

As with older devices, unlocking can be done at a Docomo Shop for 3,000 yen. However, for smartphones, the process can also be completed by phone (3,000 yen) or online via a computer (free).

If you don’t live near a Docomo Shop or don’t want to wait in line, the online option is the most convenient.

Be aware that if you have already canceled your Docomo contract, unlocking must be done at a Docomo Shop. Also note that devices cannot be unlocked within 100 days of purchase or more than 100 days after contract termination.

After unlocking: switch to an MVNO SIM

Once unlocked, you can insert SIM cards from SoftBank or any MVNO provider. Since the phone is unlocked anyway, it makes sense to cancel the Docomo contract and switch to a much cheaper MVNO SIM.

Using your iPhone overseas

This is the real reward of unlocking: inserting a local SIM overseas and using your familiar phone just as you do in Japan.

After traveling abroad multiple times, swapping SIM cards on the plane starts to feel oddly exciting—almost like a spy movie ritual.

Most Docomo smartphones work overseas, but there are rare cases where frequency compatibility is an issue. It’s best to understand your device’s supported bands and ask the SIM shop staff when purchasing a local SIM.

Check supported frequency bands

You can confirm the supported frequency bands for your Docomo device on the official specification pages.
